The Maio in Guiyang celebrate their new year around the begining of March every year. Maio is a term given to about 9 million tribal peoples who live in SW China. The Gannang Xiang Lusheng Festivall also incorporates horse racing along a rocky river bed. Many of the horses are ridden by boys, helmets are the exception. The boy uses both a whip and the whistle in his mouth to help control the horse.
